RF-welded seams. The backbone. Radio-frequency welding uses dielectric heating to fuse TPU film layers at the molecular level. There are no needle holes, because there is no sewing — and every stitch in a traditional soft case is a wick that lets water in. A welded seam, by contrast, is one continuous piece of material. Serious builders overlap the weld 10–20 mm and pressure-test every seam. If a "waterproof" case has a stitched seam, the word waterproof is doing marketing, not engineering.

The roll-top closure. The most reliable submersible seal there is, and the reason it works is counterintuitive: pressure. A roll-top seals by folding the case mouth over itself three or more times and securing it with buckles or clips. When the case goes underwater, hydrostatic pressure pushes the folded layers together — the harder the water pushes, the tighter the seal. Zero moving parts, zero maintenance, essentially nothing to fail. Its costs: slower to open, and TPU gets stiffer in cold weather.

The waterproof zipper (TIZIP-style). A molded polyurethane waterproof zipper — TIZIP is the best-known system — gives you the one thing a roll-top cannot: instant, one-handed access. In a blind, in the dark, that matters. The trade-offs are real. A zipper has a slider, teeth, and a stop — moving parts that can catch grit, freeze, or wear. It costs several times more than a roll-top closure, and it needs periodic lubrication to stay watertight.

The choice logic. For a duck-hunting line, the decision usually comes down to price point and use pattern. A submersible zipper case is the premium SKU — faster access, more convenient, priced accordingly. A roll-top is the workhorse: cheaper, more reliable, and the right answer for a case that will live in a boat box or truck bed and only open at the blind. Many brands carry both. What you should never carry is a "waterproof" case with a non-welded zipper and stitched seams, because those fail at the exact moment you need them.

The physics is simple and unforgiving. A typical duck gun with case weighs about 4–5 kg. Closed-cell EVA foam at roughly 50 kg/m³ displaces about a kilogram of water per liter of volume — a net lift of roughly 0.9–0.95 kg per liter. That means a case that floats a loaded shotgun needs about 4.5–5.5 liters of foam, after accounting for the weight of the shell material itself. That is a lot of volume. It is why genuine floating shotgun cases look thick and blocky, and why thin "floatable" cases sink when they actually matter.

Distribution is where the design is won or lost. The goal is not merely to float — it is to float muzzle-up, so the barrel and choke stay above the waterline and water does not run back into the receiver. That means the center of buoyancy has to sit ahead of (toward the muzzle) and above the center of gravity. Real protection is layered. The outer shell — typically 0.8–1.2 mm TPU — takes the abrasion and the first impact. The mid layer of closed-cell foam (30–60 kg/m³, depending on position) compresses to absorb the shock. The inner cradle is a fitted EVA liner with cutouts for the stock and receiver, so the gun is held in place instead of rattling.

The detail most cheap cases skip: stock and barrel separation. In a proper two-piece case, the stock pocket and the barrel pocket are divided by a padded partition. The gun does not contact itself — no barrel clanking against the action, no choke tube chattering against the rib.
