Brown gills, softening flesh, clouded eyes — none of it is subtle, and all of it happens before the angler makes it home.
The traditional answer is two pieces of gear: a hard-shell cooler for the ice and a fishing backpack for the tackle. Bleeding and gutting are the cheapest extension of the clock there is. Bleeding — clipping the gill arches and laying the fish on the sand, or holding it at the water line — removes the oxygen-rich blood bacteria feed on. Gutting removes the gut bioload, the densest concentration of bacteria in the fish. A well is a thermal-resistance problem with four dials: material, wall thickness, ice strategy, and geometry.
The workhorse for pack wells is closed-cell PE foam, 6–10 mm, laminated into a molded liner. It flexes enough to form a well, is water-resistant enough that the closed cells do not drink meltwater, and is cheap enough to put in every unit. EPE (expanded polyethylene, pearl cotton) is the close cousin — often cheaper, a little more open in cell structure, and it drinks more water over a season. Rigid board options (EPS, XPS) conduct more slowly per millimeter but do not form a pack well: they are stiff, heavy at thickness, and crack at the seams. Vacuum insulated panels (VIP) are the thermal ceiling — near-zero conduction at a fraction of the thickness — but they fail on puncture, cost, and service life, and they stay an expedition niche rather than a production line.
The number that matters is W/m·K: XPS around 0.030, EPS around 0.035, closed-cell PE foam around 0.04–0.05. Lower is better. In a 15 L well, the difference between 0.030 and 0.050 is not “forever” versus “never” — it is the difference between a 24-hour and a 12-hour hold at the same wall thickness.
Retention scales roughly with wall thickness and material, but also with the well’s surface-area-to-volume ratio — a tall, narrow well loses more heat per liter than a squat, wide one. The commercial baseline is a 24-hour spec: full ice load, 25°C ambient, the interior holding near 4–5°C for a day. A 48-hour spec is for expedition and long-day use, and it costs wall thickness (10 mm versus 6 mm), weight, and volume. The spec is a claim a distributor can quote to its customers, and it is only as good as the test behind it.
Gel ice packs carry more cold per liter, do not dilute, and hold through a day without replenishment — the right core for a well that opens and closes all day. Crushed ice is the coldest contact (0°C with melt) and the fastest initial pull-down, but it melts to water and adds dead weight. The working practice is the combination: an ice-pack core with a crushed-ice surround, and in salt water, the ice pack resists brine. The ice strategy and the wall are tuned together — a 10 mm wall with a lean ice pack beats a 6 mm wall with a heavy one.
The well and the pack are two products that must become one, and the integration is where the category is won or lost.
A removable insulated liner — a zip-off inner tub — is easier to clean, dry, repair, and swap for a different size, and it lets a brand run the same shell with 15 L, 20 L, and 25 L wells. An integral molded well (the well wall is the pack wall) has fewer seams and better thermal continuity, but the service path is hard: if the liner leaks, the pack is compromised. For a B2B line, the removable liner is the lower-risk, higher-variety choice.
A well with 5 L of meltwater and fish blood in it is 5 kg of dead weight and a hygiene problem if it is trapped. The fix is a floor that angles to a bottom drain with a silicone plug — drained at the boat, drained at the car, empty before it packs out. A bottom well at full 25 kg drops the center of gravity low — stable, but punishing to the lumbar. The harness — hip belt, compression straps, sternum strap — has to be sized for wet weight, not dry. The well liner is PEVA or TPU, and the question is the seam: welded versus sewn. A welded liner — hot-air or ultrasonic — has no needle holes and is a single continuous barrier. A sewn seam can weep over a season of washes, and the weep is exactly the migration path for blood and water. For a well, the weld is not a premium feature; it is the baseline.
A non-porous welded liner wipes down with fresh or salt water. The trap is fish blood: it is a protein, and it sets with heat. Rinse before it dries and a wipe is enough; let it crust and it becomes a scrub, and the liner surface takes the mark. A removable liner can be hung to dry — a wet liner left in a pack breeds its own odor, independent of the fish.
Fish smell is persistent, and it migrates through porous fabric over time. The well’s welded liner keeps the odor inside the well; the gear compartment stays clean for the next use. 500D nylon or polyester is the abrasion choice — rocks, cliffs, kayak rails, tackle-box corners — and is the standard for the well zone and the floor. 210D is the lightweight choice for short beach and shore carries where the pack is not dragged over gravel. The pick follows the primary use; a 500D shell over the well and a lighter upper is a common, sensible split.
The angler walks 30 m to 1,500 m to the spot, and the pack carries the well stocked with ice from the start. The catch goes in throughout the day and the well rides for hours without opening. Insulation matters more than access here: the well is a slow-use cold store, drained at the car.
